What to do in La Fortuna in 3 days

Three days is enough to see what matters, as long as you do not lose the mornings. Here is the order that works, and why.

Three days is enough for La Fortuna. What is not enough is being late to everything. The volcano clouds over almost every afternoon, the waterfall fills up by mid-morning, and the hot springs are better after dark. The order matters more than the list.

Day 1 · The volcano, early

Leave before eight. That is not a guide talking: Arenal wakes up clear and clouds over most days after noon. Leave it for the afternoon and you get a photo of clouds.

The walk worth doing is across the 1968 lava flow at Arenal 1968, where the trails run over the lava and the forest is slowly taking it back. If you only want the view and not the hike, Mirador El Silencio gives it with no effort.

In the afternoon, once it has clouded over, go to the hot springs. They are better at night anyway.

Day 2 · The waterfall and the forest

The Fortuna River waterfall is a 70-metre drop and five hundred steps down. The steps are real: if someone in your group has a bad knee, better to know beforehand. You can swim at the bottom.

Go early again. The buses arrive mid-morning and the pool fills up.

In the afternoon, hanging bridges or an adventure tour: zip line, rafting on the Balsa, a night walk. Arenal Jungle Tours is one of the local operators.

Day 3 · What is not on the lists

Most people waste the third day driving back to San José. Two things worth doing instead:

  • The Venado caves, an hour away. A real cave: you go in with a helmet and come out wet.
  • Lake Arenal and the road around it, the prettiest stretch in the area. If you are heading to Monteverde or Guanacaste, you pass through anyway.

Where to stay

The decision that changes the trip most is whether your hotel has its own hot springs. With them, you can get in at any hour without paying a separate entry or driving at night. Browse hotels in La Fortuna with that in mind.

What actually matters

  • The volcano shows itself in the morning. If you only get one clear morning, spend it there.
  • Bring closed shoes. The waterfall, the lava flow and the caves are not sandal territory.
  • It rains in the afternoon in green season (May to November), not all day. You plan around it, you do not cancel.
