About Arenal 1968 Volcano View & Trails

A private farm at the foot of the volcano, on the lava field left by the 1968 eruption, the one that changed the history of La Fortuna. Two trails, one short and one long, with viewpoints over the cone and the lagoon. It is the place where the scale of what happened makes the most sense.

What to expect
  • Two trails over the lava field left by the 1968 eruption.
  • Colada 1968: 2.5 km, an hour and a half to two hours. The best cone views for the least effort.
  • Bosque 1968: 4.5 km, two to two and a half hours. It loops around Los Patos lake through dense forest, with steeper climbs.
  • You can link both into a 7 km circuit if you arrive early.
Additional information
  • Entrance: 25 to 28 dollars per adult, about 15 for children aged 6 to 11. Under 6s go free.
  • Open 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon, but last entry is at 4.
  • It is about 20 minutes west of the centre and no public transport goes there: you need a car or a taxi, around 15 dollars.
